The North Dakota Society of Health-System Pharmacists (NDSHP) is formed to advance public health by promoting the professional interests of pharmacists practicing in hospitals and other organized health-care settings. NDSHP membership is open to pharmacists practicing in hospitals or institutions.
The NDSHP works closely with the North Dakota Pharmacists Association and holds a joint annual convention with the NDPhA. During the convention the NDSHP holds a separate business meeting and all members are invited to attend. The North Dakota Pharmacist has regular messages from NDSHP officers and updates on activities that are important to health-system pharmacists. The NDSHP also provides funding for the position of Executive Vice President along with the NDPhA and North Dakota Pharmacy Service Corporation.
The NDSHP is an affiliated state chapter of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. This affiliation allows the NDSHP to send two delegates to the ASHP House of Delegates to help formulate national policy. NDSHP also has a significant amount of resources in the office that relates to policies and procedures and ASHP guidelines. These resources are available to NDSHP members. The NDSHP is also using ASHP public relations materials to promote the role of pharmacists to the public and to administrative personnel. The NDSHP urges members to be active in ASHP but national membership is not required to be a member of NDSHP.
The NDSHP represents health-system pharmacists in regulatory and legislative issues. During this last year, the NDSHP informed members about proposed Board of Pharmacy rules and offered testimony during rules hearings. The NDSHP also contacted legislative officials concerning Medicare funding of residency programs and commented on the importance of maintaining pharmacists as a part of the conditions of participation for Medicare accreditation.
In October of 1998, the NDSHP also resumed hosting the Mid-Year Clinical Seminar. This event was held in Fargo and provided six hours of continuing education. It is anticipated that this program will strengthen and become an annual event.
The NDSHP works with and supports the activities of the NDSU College of Pharmacy student chapter, providing insights into health-system practice.
